Is Your BCM Program Failing?

I recently sat down with a colleague to talk about Business Continuity Management, the need for use of metrics in  today’s programs and why some people lead good programs but many fail.  We looked back at our experience, the people we have worked with and concluded that the deciding factor  was the inability of many BCM Managers to step back and be strategic in the planning and management of their program.

So many BCM Managers, excellent in their knowledge of BCM, its methodology and application but often lack the ability to strategically plan their efforts today, next year and the years down the road.  So, here are some steps to follow:

  1. Always Know Where You Stand – Assess your program and know where your strengths and weaknesses across Program Management, Crisis Management, Business Recovery and Disaster Recovery.
  2. Brainstorm Your Future – Where do we need to be as well as where we would like to be in 1 year, 3 years and 5 years? Think outside and inside the box.
  3. Focus on the Critical Path – Identify the shortest path to address the most critical exposures and risks in your program.
  4. Build a Roadmap – Define in a simple, one page document the deliverables and tasks by quarter that need to be accomplished over the year based on #1 and #2.
  5. Communicate  – Communicate the existence of the roadmap and how it will be implemented to management.
  6. Evaluate Your Performance – Regularly assess your performance with management in meeting the roadmap to include where you are meeting the goals, where there are roadblocks, etc.

We talked ,that in our experience, when you do your job well strategically and tactically, your program should be embedded in the culture and in maintenance mode  within 3 to 5 years.   As I have always said, if you don’t know where you are going, it doesn’t matter what road you take.
